ROSEMONT AT A GLANCE
Rosemont has a neighbourhood school, Selkirk College’s Silver King campus and the wooded recreation space of Art Gibbon Memorial Park. Its residential history reaches back well before it became part of the City of Nelson in 1961.
A woodland walk at Art Gibbon Park, a bike-park session or lunch at the neighbourhood market can give you reasons to stay close to home in Rosemont. For students and staff, Silver King campus adds another frequent destination.
Rosemont’s housing and early streets
The City’s 2022 Heritage Plan identifies modest housing and an early street grid among Rosemont’s characteristics. Later building and renovation have added to that mix.
Apartments and townhomes are also part of Rosemont. Nelson CARES’ Copper Mountain Court, completed in 2001 near the park and school, combines both as affordable rental housing. For an apartment or townhome offered for sale, check the ownership terms in the listing and property documents.
Rosemont was once called Smelter Hill, after the Hall Mines smelter. A. H. Green surveyed the Rosemont Addition in 1912; the City’s 2011 heritage research dates its annexation to 1961.
The name came from teacher Lottie Coates, who suggested Rosemont in 1912 after developers asked for ideas. The Nelson Museum’s archivist describes early residential growth on the lower streets, while farms and dairies occupied land farther uphill. The story behind Rosemont’s name
Woodland trails and a changing story at Art Gibbon Park
Art Gibbon Memorial Park, at West Richards Street and Choquette Avenue, includes:
- Woodland trails for a walk within the city.
- The skatepark and bike park for an outing built around riding.
- Disc golf and a playground for different ages and interests.
There is something to read along the way too. StoryShare, the permanent story walk opened in September 2024, uses weatherproof panels for changing stories and artwork. School District 8’s account describes student work among the displays. A return visit can bring a different story.
The market, school and Silver King campus
KTK Rosemont Market & Café, at 1516 Crease Avenue, offers groceries, produce and prepared meals. It gives the neighbourhood a place to stop for lunch or pick up a few things without making every errand a trip downtown.
Rosemont Elementary is at 1605 Crease Avenue. For school-aged children, have School District 8 confirm assignment and transportation for the prospective address.
Selkirk College’s Silver King campus is on Silver King Road. The college’s student hair salon accepts public clients by appointment.
The campus occupies the former DeJong dairy farm, where the B.C. Vocational School opened in 1964 before joining Selkirk in 1975. The archival history connects that change to Rosemont’s growth.
For a home with a suite, assess its approvals and current rental evidence separately from its distance to the college. Include the layout, access and privacy when deciding how you would share the property.
Comparing a Rosemont home and its surroundings
Section 4.9 of the City’s adopted 2025 Official Community Plan sets out direction for Granite Pointe redevelopment. For a home nearby, ask planning staff which proposals are at the application or approval stage, and what the available plans show about access and the outlook from the house. The plan does not confirm the timing or final form of construction beside a particular home.
For the property itself:
- Construction and renovation history: establish the year built, subsequent changes and condition. Keep required repairs separate from optional improvements.
- Parking and outdoor space: try the route from the vehicle to the door, then find the usable area for gardening, sitting outside or storing equipment.
- Winter arrangements: Nelson’s snow-management information notes higher accumulation in Rosemont than Fairview. Look at the approach to the house and room for cleared snow.
See the Nelson BC real estate guide for the wider neighbourhood comparison.
